Bird watching is an activity that has been enjoyed for centuries. It’s an unexpected tactic to get away from the fast-paced world we live in and slow it all down. As the seasons change, so do the species of birds you can find. We want you to enjoy a year-round birding experience, so here’s what to look for:

Spring

Known for bright yellow feathers and captivating songs, American Goldfinches are commonly seen in spring. They migrate North during this season and can be found in gardens, fields, and forests. Their bright color and distinct song make these birds a sign of the season.

The Baltimore Oriole is another colorful bird seen in the eastern United States during spring. Look for their signature orange color, just like a hunters vest. They build nests near water sources, and are typically seen in trees and shrubs. They also love their sweets, so try setting out some oranges or grape jelly to attract them.

If you’re looking to challenge your skills, a more elusive bird to watch for is the Prothonotary Warbler. These are typically found in the southern United States. Look for the bright yellow with a blue-gray back.

Summer

The incredible Ruby-Throated Hummingbird is an excellent bird to observe during the summer months. These tiny specimens are fun to spot with their iridescent feathers and lightning-fast movements. These hummers can be a difficult bird to catch sight of, so you’ll be lucky to claim that rare moment.

Hummingbirds are often found in gardens and meadows, where they feed on nectar from flowers. To attract hummingbirds to your home, try planting flowers such as bee balm, cardinal flower, or columbine.

If you’re looking for a larger bird to observe, the Great Blue Heron is an excellent choice. These majestic birds are often found near water sources, such as streams, rivers, and lakes. You can spot them by looking for their long, slender legs, and bluish-gray plumage. Herons are patient hunters, often standing still for long periods of time before making their move to catch a fish or other aquatic prey. To see a Great Blue Heron in action, try visiting a local wetland or lake during the early morning or late afternoon. Keep an eye out for one on your next fishing trip, they’ll likely be looking for a catch too.

Fall

During fall, the Eastern Bluebird is the one to watch. They have a unique blue and orange color, which makes spotting them fairly easy. You can find them perched on fences and poles for a stunning bird watching experience. They feed on insects and berries, giving you an opportunity to watch them hunt during the season.

The Cedar Waxwing is a social bird that thrives in woodlands, orchards, and parks. Their resemblance to a cardinal makes them enjoyable to watch from a distance, especially during autumn when they gather in groups. As one of the most recognizable songbirds, they are a sight to behold as they fly in a synchronized pattern.

The Red-tailed Hawk is one of the most magnificent birds of prey you’ll ever encounter, and their beauty always shines during the fall season. Their iconic rusty tail is a true marvel to observe as they soar, on the hunt for their prey. They enjoy rabbits, squirrels, and mice, so clearings or fields are good places to start looking.

Winter

The winter season does not stop birds from hunting, perching, and migrating. In fact, this season offers birdwatchers a unique opportunity to see some of the rarest bird species in their natural habitat.

The best bird to watch during winter is the Snow Bunting. They are migratory birds, flying from northern Canada, and can be spotted in the northern parts of the U.S. Spotting them in the snow is a magnificent sight because of their perfectly camouflaged white feathers. They flock in large groups, making them easy to find despite their expert cover, and their unique chirping sound sets them apart.

The Snowy Owl is one of the most sought-after winter birds, and they are the perfect bird to search for on any winter bird watching excursion. These birds are prized for their massive size, striking white plumage, and piercing yellow eyes.

Bird watching is the year-round activity that provides a unique opportunity to get close to nature. No matter the season, you can always find captivating  and unique birds. Make sure to be patient and observe their natural behaviors. You’ll be amazed to discover how fascinating bird watching can be.
