Exploring Wilderness State Park

Nestled in serene Northern Michigan. Wilderness State Park is the perfect escape for nature enthusiasts seeking the lush forests, pristine lakes, and untouched landscapes of Michigan. I recently took a camping trip to this hidden gem in Michigan and it was a true getaway from the hustle and bustle of my city life in Grand Rapids, MI. Immersing yourself in the raw beauty of the great outdoors in Northern Michigan is a true wonder.

A Rustic Retreat

My arrival brought nothing but tranquility. I was welcomed by the sounds of the native birds, the wind blowing through the trees, and waves crashing on the shore. I was ready for this to be the soundtrack to my four-day rustic camping trip and ready for this simple reminder of the joys found in nature.

When it comes to rustic camping, there’s something truly special about getting absorbed in nature’s embrace and welcoming a simpler way of life. As a self-proclaimed “expert” when it comes to camping, I come prepared for everything. But the one thing I cannot go without on a camping trip is coffee. Making it while camping is as rustic as it gets.

Coffee and Campfires

My ideal coffee method is pour-over. It’s kind of a full-body experience, especially while out in the woods. You heat the kettle of water to the perfect temperature until you hear it whistling, grind up some fresh Schuil beans, and finally let the bloom happen, giving you the full aroma of the coffee. And then, of course, your first sip.

Stargazing and Serenity

Each day brought new adventures and discoveries, from exploring the nearby trails through the dense coniferous forests to relaxing on the beach of Lake Michigan which was only a short walk from our campsite, to wandering around a peninsula to see the Mackinac Bridge. I felt truly connected to the land, humbled by the vastness of nature’s grandeur. Our evenings were spent around the crackling fire where we would converse until we began gazing into the night sky piecing together constellations. After all Wilderness State Park is recognized as a Dark Sky Park in Michigan.
